Question
A Mufti was asked: "The Imaam leads the Taraaweeh Salaat sitting on a chair. Is the Salaat of the Muqtadis valid?" The Mufti Sahib responded that he 'thinks' that it is valid. What is the ruling?
Answer
The Mufti Sahib's reply was improper. He should not have said that he 'thinks'. The correct reply for him was to have said: "I don't know or I shall check the mas'alah…." This would have been an honourable answer. There are innumerable masaa-il which all the Ulama are unaware of. It is never belittling to say: 'I don't know'.
The Salaat of the standing Muqtadis behind the imam who sits in a chair and leads, is not valid. The Salaat of a musalli who makes proper / normal Ruku and Sajdah is not valid behind a person who executes these Arkaan with signs.
