Zakaat The Majlis Vol 19 No 05, p.4

I have taken out my Zakaat and set aside the money with the intention of giving the poor and needy when they come.

Question

I have taken out my Zakaat and set aside the money with the intention of giving the poor and needy when they come. The amount is a considerable sum. By the end of the year, there was still a large amount left. Do I have to pay Zakaat on this separated sum of money?

Answer

As long as the money is in your possession it remains your property. At the end of your Zakaat year, Zakaat has to be paid on it. Should you die, the amount which you had set aside for Zakaat is part of your estate and is subject to inheritance.
