Here in Sri Lanka where I am, Sunni Imaams of Musjids performed Janaazah Salaat (Ghaaib) for the Shiahs who were killed in the helicopter crash. We are Shaafis. I protested and exclaimed that according to Imaam Shaafi (Rahmatullah alayh) Shiahs are not Muslims. I as well as some others walked out. What is the status of these Imaams?

Alhamdulillah! You acted correctly by abstaining from the haraam invalid 'salaat' which the jaahil imaam had performed for the kaafir Shiah. These bootlicking Imaams are generally juhhaal (great ignoramuses), hence they are unable to distinguish between jam and faeces. It is an act of kufr to perform janaazah salaat for kuffaar.
