Question
Is it permissible for Muslims in India to vote for a non -Muslim secular political party? According to the Ulama in India it is 'waajib' to vote. Muslims are being oppressed, persecuted and even lynched by the orthodox Hindus who are today in power. The stated policy of the extremist Hindus is to commit genocide - to kill or convert all Muslims to Hinduism and all Musjids will be made temples of idol worship. The secular party is opposed to the evil policies of the extremists and if they should come to power, Muslims will be safe. In this scenario will it be permissible to vote?
Answer
The reasoning underlying the permissibility view in India is valid. Voting in this case is not for accepting the law of Taghoot. It is a strategy in a situation of life and death. Based on the principles of the Shariah, it will be permissible to vote in India.
However, it is essential that Muslims understand that despite the Fiqhi permissibility, it is never the solution. It will not save Muslims from the Athaab of Allah Azza wa Jal. The punishment of Allah in India is in the form of brutal oppression of the cow and idol worshippers. The Punishment of Allah Ta'ala cannot be averted nor eliminated by voting or by any other means besides repentance, obedience and Sabr.
When Bani Israaeel complained to Nabi Musaa (Alayhis salaam) about the brutal oppression and persecution of Fir'oun, he advised them:
"Seek help from Allah and have Sabr (Patience). Verily,
The earth belongs to Allah. He bestows it to whomever
Of His servants He wills. And, the ultimate victory is for the Muttaqeen."
