Can an elderly person appoint someone to pelt the Jamaraat on his/her behalf?

Question

Can an elderly person appoint someone to pelt the Jamaraat on his/her behalf?

Answer

Only if the elder is so frail that he is unable to walk to the jamaraat nor is there any conveyance that can take him may he appoint someone. Excessive crowds are not a justifiable reason to appoint someone else to pelt on one's behalf. If the crowds are excessive, then delay the pelting until the evening or evening around midnight. By delaying the pelting until the evening or midnight does not render a Dumm Waajib.
