Question
In India we have a practice of paying the Huffaaz for reciting Qur'aan Shareef for a deceased relative. When my father passed away, we called a couple of Huffaaz to make Khatam. Then we paid them. Is this practice valid and permissible?
Answer
The practice of paying for Qur‟aan recital is not permissible. There is no reward for this bid‟ah practice. The deceased does not derive any benefit from the khatam made by contemptible mercenaries. The best is to recite the Qur‟aan Majeed yourself, even a few pages and make dua for the thawaab to be transferred to the deceased. Do not ask others to read. Occasionally even whilst passing the Qabrustaan or anywhere else, recite Surah Ikhlaas thrice with the intention of the thawaab for the amwaat (deceased).
