What is the difference between halaalah and mu‟tah? We have ulema in our communities that perform halaalah for couples and get paid for it. Is this not prostitution? Furthermore is it permissible to perform salaah behind an imam who does Halaalah for couples? If such an imam comes on radio or has lectures, is it permissible to listen to them? They view it as helping couples and they even go as far to facilitate halaalah and get other men to do halaalah and glorify their actions masquerading as marriage counsellors. What is the correct approach in light of Quraan and Sunnah?
Answer
Mu'tah is the Shiah system of temporary ‗marriage', even for one hour. It is legalized prostitution. There is no system such as ‗halaalah' in Islam. What some molvis are doing is similar to mu'tah and is tantamount to prostitution. Never should one listen to their lectures. While Salaat behind any faasiq-faajir is valid, it is sinful and not permissible for trustees to appoint such an immoral person to be the Imaam.
