Are Ramadhaan countdown calendars permissible for children? Such a calendar has approximately 30 squares. The child can open each day one square to find a chocolate/ treat. It is a way to count down Eid and to encourage children to do good deeds. The child is allowed to open only one square if he/she kept a fast.
Answer
Fasting is an Ibaadat. Ibaadat should not be contaminated with nonsensical trappings such as the drivel 'countdown' calendars. It should not be inculcated in children that the Fasts of Ramadhaan are a burden and that they should daily be in expectation of an exit from this 'burden'.
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "For the Fasting person there are two moments of happiness: at the time of Iftaar and at the time when he will meet his Rabb." With these nonsensical items the child's mind is focussed on trivialities.
Parents should explain to their children the importance and significance of Fasting. The Pleasure of Allah Ta'ala and the bounties of Jannat are the rewards, not stupid, nonsensical squares of chocolates which in all probability are haraam due to the numerous chemical ingredients in chocolates.
It is not permissible to corrupt the minds of children by trivializing Ibaadat with silly pieces of chocolate as rewards for such a great and wonderful Ibaadat as the Saum of Ramadhaan.
