Question
We are 10 brothers and friends and we want to complete one Khatam for our deceased parents. We each read 3 parahs and in that way the Quraan is completed each month. Is this an acceptable way?
Answer
No, it is not an acceptable way. It is bid'ah and smacks of riya (show). There is no basis in the Sunnah for such collective arrangement. Ibaadat is a private affair which should be concealed. Every one of the 10 chaps should recite whatever amount he wishes and whenever he desires. There should be no 'khatam' arrangement.
