Question

The following are the comments of Mufti Taqi Sahib made on the occasion of Pakistan's independence day celebration in which Mufti Taqi also participates. Are his comments and participation valid and permissible? "What is the reason that we do not celebrate Eid Milad-un-Nabi (the Prophet's birthday), but we celebrate Pakistan Day – we celebrate Pakistan's Independence Day? So, I wish to clarify that there is no doubt whatsoever that in the history of this universe, the grandest and most magnificent day was the one on which Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, sent Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) for the guidance of this universe. There is no day greater in human history than the day he arrived. However, it is his very teaching, his Sunnah, and the practice of his devoted Companions (Sahaabah) that they never celebrated a specific day for the Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam). If we were to start celebrating it, it would be an addition to the Deen. It would be an addition to the commands of the faith, and any addition to religious matters is termed Bid'ah (religious innovation). As far as August 14th is concerned – regarding August 14th Independence Day – it is not a religious ceremony. It is not a religious gathering or a religious function; rather, it is a national event. It is celebrated as national independence, as a symbol of freedom. No person who observes it does so by considering it a part of the faith or an integral component of the religion." (End of Mufti Taqi's comment)

Answer

The independence day celebration is haraam. Mufti Taqi's participation is haraam. His participation does not render the haraam into halaal. His comments pertaining to the Bid'ati custom of 'Eid Milaad-e-Nabi', are a red herring to detract the minds from the haraam independence day celebrations and ceremonies.

While he commented on the Bid'ati custom of celebrating the birthday of our Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), he maintains a haraam silence regarding the multitude of haraam acts associated with the kuffaar independence day celebrations. He should shame himself for betraying Islam in such a disgusting manner.
