Is it permissible to consume a herb which produces hallucinations?

Question

Is it permissible to consume a herb which produces hallucinations? It is used as a medicine. Bright lights are visualized.

Answer

It is not permissible to consume a herb which produces hallucinations. A 'medicine' which disturbs the mental equilibrium and induces the type of hallucinatory effect described by you is not permissible.

The lights, etc. experienced when the mind is overwhelmed by such substances could be shaitaani deceptions. Shaitaan is capable of creating the experience of 'noor' – the noor of even angels in the human mind.
