Question
I am told that according to Imaam Maalik (Rahmatullah alayh) the Taraaweeh Salaat consists of 36 raka'ts. Is this correct?
Answer
It is incorrect. Twenty Raka'ts Taraaweeh are Sunnatul Muakkadah according to all Four Math-habs. There is no difference of opinion on this issue. After every four raka'ts there is a pause which is called Tarweehah. During this pause it is permissible to engage in any act of ibaadat whether Thikr, Tilaawat of the Qur'aan, Dua or Nafl Salaat. It was the practice of the people of Madinah during the early days to perform four raka'ts Nafl individually during this Pause. In Makkah the practice was to make Tawaaf during the Pause. The 16 raka'ts which they used to perform in Madina are Nafl, which are not part of Taraaweeh.
