Nikah (Marriage) - Talaaq (Divorce) The Majlis Vol 22 No 12, p.5

After giving his wife one Talaaq, the husband and the wife separated.

Question

After giving his wife one Talaaq, the husband and the wife separated. Although they stayed in the same house, they slept in separate rooms. The husband made his own food, etc. arrangements. After one year both decided to end the marriage. Should the man give his wife three Talaaqs?

Answer

There is no need for three Talaaqs (Divorce utterances) to terminate the Nikah. One Talaaq is also sufficient to end the marriage. You mention that the man, after having given his wife one Talaaq lived separately from her. If after one Talaaq, the husband did not reconcile with his wife within the Iddat period, then the one Talaaq had finally and irrevocably terminated the marriage. The Iddat is three monthly haidh cycles. The marriage had ended long ago. The woman is now free to marry any other man.
