It has become a trend now for the imam who will be leading the Janaazah Salaat or one of the deceased's family members just before the Janaazah Salaat

Question

It has become a trend now for the imam who will be leading the Janaazah Salaat or one of the deceased's family members just before the Janaazah Salaat commences to announce to the jamaat waiting to perform the Janaazah Salaat to: (1) Forgive the marhoom for any offence he/she may have caused to anyone. (2) Contact one of the deceased's children or other relatives to settle any accounts the marhoom may have not settled and monies he/she was owing in his/her lifetime to anyone and to settle any of the marhoom's accounts and debts. Is it permissible to make this kind of announcement at the time of Janaazah Salaat?

Answer

The announcements made at the time of the Janaazah Salaat are bid'ah and not permissible. This is not the occasion for making such announcements. This type of announcement had never existed in Islam since the past 14 centuries.
