Question
All owners of property ask for a deposit in addition to the monthly rent. The deposit is retained as long as the tenant occupies the house, and is to cover for any damage to the house. Is it permissible to ask a deposit and to use the money?
Answer
It is permissible to give the deposit to the landlord. Consider it to be rental in advance. The day you vacate, it will be rent for that month, that is, if you did not damage anything which requires the deposit to be used towards paying for the damage. It is simply a month's rental paid in advance. The money may be used.
