Question
A special slaughter-pen has been designed for slaughtering cattle without the need for stunning. However, in this system the animal is slaughtered while standing. The head protrudes from the contraption and is held in position by brackets. Is this system permissible?
Answer
No, this system is haraam. It displaces the Shar'i system which requires that the animal be on the ground on its side facing the Qiblah. The slaughterer too should be facing the Qiblah. It is not permissible to slaughter (thabah) an animal in the standing position.
