Is it true that a man of illegitimate birth cannot be an Imaam to lead the Salaat?

If the illegitimate child is qualified, he may become Imaam. However, in a place where his illegitimacy is known it will be advisable that he should not be appointed the Imaam. People will view his appointment with detestation and begin gossiping. Nevertheless, it is permissible for him to be an Imaam.
