Question
Almost all the commercially slaughtered chickens that are certified Halaal in South Africa are stunned prior to slaughter. What is the Shariah’s view on such stunning prior to slaughter?
Answer
All, not ‘almost all’, commercially killed chickens are electrocuted – electrically stunned by dragging their heads through a trough of electrified water. This cruel infliction of injury prior to slaughter is haraam. Every kind of pre-slaughter injury is haraam. The Shariah is emphatic on this prohibition.
