Is it permissible to buy, sell and consume hotcross buns and easter eggs? A Maulana says that these things no longer have any religious meaning, and the cross on the bun should simply be broken off. The bun may be consumed.

Hotcross buns, easter eggs and all kinds of religious artefacts of the baatil religions are haraam. The maulana blurted out something which he does not understand.
Hotcross buns and easter eggs still do have religious connotations. If it be assumed that the religious dimension no longer exists, then too, the very shirki origin of these artefacts renders the buns and easter eggs haraam. A cross is the symbol of kufr and shirk of the worst kind. It symbolizes the Christian baatil doctrine of trinity which claims that Nabi Isaa (Alayhis Salaam) and Hadhrat Maryam (Alayhas salaam) are deities and constituents of the trinity concept of godhood.
It is shirk of the worst kind – worse than stone idols. The worshippers of stone idols do not believe that the idols they manufacture with their own hands are the Creator. They believe these rubbish stone idols to be intermediaries who will intercede for them by Allah Ta’ala. On the contrary, those who subscribe to the Christian doctrine of trinity believe in the godhood of Nabi Isaa (Alayhis salaam) and Hadhrat Maryam (Alayhis salaam).
On the Day of Qiyaamah, Allah Ta’ala will say to Nabi Isaa (Alayhis salaam):
“O Isaa, the son of Maryam!
