A friend who was in need and who was entitled to accept Zakaat due to his poverty, asked for a loan.

Question

A friend who was in need and who was entitled to accept Zakaat due to his poverty, asked for a loan. I gave him a sum of money with the intention of it being my Zakaat payment. I told him that it is not a loan and that there is no need to repay it. A year later he wanted to return the money. He insisted that I should take it. On his insistence I took the money. Was my Zakaat discharged? What should I do with the money?

Answer

Your Zakaat was discharged when your friend had accepted it. The best is to give the money as Sadqah to a poor Muslim . If you are in need, you may use the money for yourself.
