Question
A person wanted to hire a house from me. He paid a deposit to secure the house for him. However, before the date of occupation he wants to cancel the agreement. Is it permissible to refuse refunding the deposit? There were others who also wanted to hire the house while it was unoccupied.
Answer
According to the Shariah, the deposit is not forfeited. You have to refund the deposit regardless of the person not honouring his promise of taking the apartment.
