A molvi says that to join in the cultural celebrations of non-Muslims is permissible as long as there will be no wine and other haraam acts.

Participation in kuffaar celebrations is per se Haraam even if we assume that there will be no wine, dancing, music, etc. Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Whoever emulates a nation is of them."

The fellow who had answered the question is a kuffaar bootlicker. Not only are religious celebrations haraam, even the cultural celebrations of kuffaar are haraam.
