In our Jami Masjid, the musallees leave a gap exactly behind the imam for a buzurg alim.

Question

In our Jami Masjid, the musallees leave a gap exactly behind the imam for a buzurg alim. The alim has a room in the masjid where he stays most of the time. The alim has a habit of joining the jamat usually when the iqamat is about to finish. In the meantime, the musalles form rows in first and second saff leaving a gap in the first saff behind the imam for this alim. People keep looking behind their backs for the alim to come and join the saff . There is no concentration on the iqamat which is being read or the salaat which is to begin as everyone is looking towards the alim and making way for him to join the saff. Should a layperson go ahead and fill this gap with the intention of following shariah in formation of rows and putting an end to this drama?

Answer

Shaitaan fills the gap. It is not permissible to leave a gap in the saff even if the intention is for a buzrug to occupy the spot.

The musallis should not leave the gap. It is Waajib for any musalli to fill the gap. In the first instance, a gap should not be left. The one who had suggested the gap for the moron so-called ‗aalim' is also a moron. This ‗aalim' must shame himself for such gross violation of a Hukm of the Shariah.
