Yes, there is a degree of purdah between a man and his stepmother. While they may speak and she may appear in front of him without Niqaab, they should not be alone or in privacy. She must be modestly dressed. They should not shake hands. Salaam will suffice. He is not a valid mahram for her on a journey.
