Question
My stepmother has brothers and sisters. She prefers to live with me (her stepdaughter) and my husband. Whose obligation is it to support her? Is it not the duty of her siblings to support her?
Answer
Looking after your stepmother is indeed an act of great thawaab. However, it is not the legal obligation of her stepdaughter to maintain her if she has family members to support her. If her own brothers and sisters refuse to support her, then it will be a duty on her stepdaughter to support her. She was your father's best friend. In this regard Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:
―Of the noblest deeds of virtue is that a man is kind to the relatives of his father's friends after his (father's) death.‖
