I shall be getting married. The girl‟s side wants to have a reception and we want to have a Walima. Can we do it as a joint event where we (the boy‟s side) pay for the food and the girl‟s father pays for the venue?
Answer
The joint/hybrid affair described by you is not a walimah. The walimah is a simple feast by the husband. After the Nikah, a few relatives, friends and some poor persons should be invited to a simple feast. There is no need to hire a venue. The customary reception organized by the girl's side is not permissible.
