When people give money, clothes, etc. to our children, does that mean the gift is owned by the baby? Are the parents allowed to give away these gifts when the child is done with it? What about sharing the gifts such as clothes or toys with the next sibling?
Answer
Yes, most certainly, the gifts are owned by the babies. Yes, parents may not use the gifts for themselves nor give it to others. When the child no longer has use for the gifts, e.g. has outgrown the garments, then if these are still good and sound, it must be sold. If given away, parents should pay the fair value and keep the money in trust for the child. The money may be invested on behalf of the child. If parents use the clothes for another child, they must pay the value and keep the money in trust.
