Some of our so-called local "Ulama"here used to employ Surah Yaasin in catching thieves. They use palm fronds which is being held on the nipples of 2 men. The fronds open and close. The suspect will place his hand in between the 2 sticks. If it closes on him, he's the one otherwise, not. Is this act permissible?
Answer
This act is not permissible. Amaliyaat of any kind may not be used to accuse a person. Such acts never are evidence in the Shariah. Even a genuine amal can become contaminated by shaitaani interference.
