My father had neglected me in childhood.

Question

My father had neglected me in childhood. He did not maintain me and my mother. Does he have rights over me?

Answer

Even if your father had neglected you, be kind and obedient to him. Please him and gain immense thawaab (reward). Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Maintenance of family ties is to be kind to an unkind relative."

Help and please your father for the Pleasure of Allah Ta‟ala. You will then be successful and there will be much barkat in your life. After all, he is your father. He will have to answer to Allah Ta‟ala for having neglected you. But, you as a son should not be disrespectful and disobedient to him. Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Your father is (your) Central Gate of Jannat."
