The imaam at our prison in the U.S. says that it is not Fardh to follow the Sunnah.

Question

The imaam at our prison in the U.S. says that it is not Fardh to follow the Sunnah. He says that only Allah has the right to make something Fardh. Is he correct?

Answer

It is compulsory to follow the Sunnah. In fact the Sunnah is Islam itself. It is Allah Ta'ala Who has made following the Sunnah Fardh. In numerous verses in the Qur'aan, Allah Ta'ala commands: "Obey Allah and obey the Rasool." This Command is Allah's Command to follow the Sunnah of the Rasool. The imaam at your end is in grievous error for claiming that it is not sinful to discard the Sunnah. Whatever the Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) ordered is the Command of Allah Ta'ala. Thus, the Qur'aan Majeed states: "Adhere to whatever the Messenger has given to you, and abstain from whatever he has forbidden you of."
