Question
In our country (Pakistan) there is a custom of giving gifts to the groom on the occasion of the walimah. It is considered extremely bad if gifts are not given on this occasion. Is there any Islamic significance in this practice?
Answer
The custom of giving gifts on the occasion of the walimah is baseless and not permissible. The money, etc. should be given to the poor. Furthermore, even to the poor, the gifts should be at some other time. New customs should not be added to the walimah.
