Question

Is there some general principle that if I download & store anything off the internet then I possess ownership of it, regardless of whether its patented, trademarked, or copyrighted?

Answer

The principle is ownership. If you own anything, then you may sell it. If you stole it, you don't own it, hence possession and selling will be haraam.
