What is the meaning of Jihad?

Jihad is a war which the Islamic state wages against the kuffaar countries in order to establish Islam in their lands. But today there is no real Shar'i Jihad any where. All the Muslim countries are today governed by kuffaar with Muslim names. And the Jihaadi groups are primarily killing Muslims, especially in the Syrian-Iraqi scenario of anarchy and strife.
