Question
You say that the Islamic banks are haraam. What is the alternative? We are in need of banking facilities?
Answer
While we say that the so-called Islamic banks are haraam, we did not say that making use of the banking facilities of the kuffaar banks is haraam. When necessary it is permissible to use the facilities of these banks. But investing in them is not permissible. The alternative to haraam Islamic banking is to operate the bank in accordance with the Shariah. This is the only alternative. If the so-called Islamic banks should operate within the confines of the Shariah, no one will say that they are haraam. It is not an insurmountable task to operate a bank fully in accordance with the Shariah. The problem is that the bankers are influenced by capitalism. They incline strongly to the quick riba boodle. They refuse to enter into any lawful trading enterprise because of the natural risks, hence they model all their dealings according to the capitalist banks, not according to the Shariah.
