Question
This year, our Imaam absented himself more than what the previous Imaam had absented himself in five years. He abandoned his Musjid duties to go for 40 days Tabligh, yet he is being paid for his presence at the Musjid. In his absence, there is sometimes no one to do the imaamate. It is becoming a mess. Please comment.
Answer
It is not permissible for an Imaam to abandon his post to participate in tabligh. His first tabligh is his obligation at the Musjid. It is not permissible to pay him for the days which he absconded. The pay for the 40 days is haraam. The trustees of the Musjid have no right of misappropriating the Waqf funds to make haraam payments.
