Is it permissible to keep and sell cats?

It is permissible to keep and to sell cats even if they are black. It is permissible to keep them in the house. They are not in the category of dogs or black dogs. Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) was nicknamed 'Abu Hurairah' (the Father of the Cat) by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) because he was fond of a kitten which he had kept with him.
